Oil Control & Pores products address some of the most commonly experienced skincare concerns - excess shine and the appearance of enlarged pores. The right combination of products and ingredients can make a real, visible difference to how balanced the skin looks and feels through the day.

Ingredients Most Effective for Controlling Oil

The most reliable ingredients for oil control work by either absorbing excess sebum or regulating how much the skin produces. Niacinamide - a form of vitamin B3 that helps regulate sebum production and supports an even, balanced complexion - is the most widely recommended ingredient for this purpose. Salicylic acid clears pores by dissolving the oil and dead cells that contribute to congestion, making it effective for both shine control and blemish prevention. Zinc is another useful active - it helps to balance oil production without stripping the skin. Clay and kaolin in formulas like masks and cleansers physically absorb oil from the surface.

Key oil control actives

  • Niacinamide - regulates sebum and balances tone
  • Salicylic acid - clears pores and reduces congestion
  • Zinc - balances oil without stripping the skin
  • Kaolin clay - absorbs surface oil on contact

Minimising the Appearance of Pores

Pores cannot change in size - they are a fixed physical feature. What products can do is minimise their appearance by keeping them clear and reducing the oiliness around them. Exfoliation is the most effective approach: regular use of a BHA like salicylic acid clears the inside of pores and prevents the build-up of oil and dead cells that makes them appear larger. Niacinamide supports a more even skin surface, which also reduces the visual prominence of pores. Matte-finish moisturisers and primers create a smoother-looking surface that reflects light more evenly, making pores less visible in day-to-day wear.

  • Pores cannot physically shrink - appearance can be improved
  • BHA exfoliation clears inside pores effectively
  • Niacinamide smooths the skin surface
  • Matte-finish products improve daytime appearance

Combination Skin and Oil Control

Combination skin - where the T-zone is oily but the cheeks and outer face are normal or dry - needs a targeted approach rather than blanket oil control across the whole face. Applying oil-controlling products to the T-zone only, while keeping more nourishing formulas on drier areas, prevents the cheeks from becoming tight or over-stripped. A balancing toner with niacinamide works well across the whole face. Targeted clay masks applied to the T-zone only are more effective than all-over masking for combination skin. Keep the routine simple - too many oil control steps at once can cause the skin to over-produce oil in response to dryness.

  • Apply oil control products to the T-zone specifically
  • Use a balancing toner across the whole face
  • Spot-apply clay masks to oily areas only
  • Over-controlling oil can trigger more sebum production

Mattifying vs Oil-Free - What is the Difference

Mattifying and oil-free are not the same thing, though they are often used interchangeably. An oil-free product contains no added oils in its formula - it may still create a dewy finish and may not control shine significantly. A mattifying product is specifically formulated to absorb or reduce the appearance of shine, usually through the inclusion of silica, clay, or similar absorbent ingredients. For shine control, mattifying is the more relevant label to look for. Building an oil control routine without over-drying requires choosing lightweight, water-based formulas and avoiding harsh astringents or high-alcohol products that strip the skin barrier and prompt more oil production in response.

  • Oil-free means no added oils - not necessarily mattifying
  • Mattifying products actively reduce shine
  • Look for silica or kaolin in mattifying formulas
  • Avoid harsh astringents - they trigger more oil long-term
