The Wash-Day Protocol

You're probably washing wrong — technique is the free upgrade

The technique audit. Where the lather goes, what the water costs, how hair dries. Method is the free upgrade.

Next wash day. The difference shows the same afternoon.

This is for you if…

  • Hair goes flat or frizzy within hours of washing
  • You shampoo the lengths and condition the roots (swap them)
  • Water temperature has never crossed your mind
  • Towel turban, rough brushing, maximum heat — the classics
  • You would like better results without buying anything

What’s going on

Most hair complaints blamed on products are technique problems. Shampoo scrubbed into lengths that only needed the rinse-through. Conditioner rubbed into roots — instant flatness. Scalding water, stealing the natural gloss. Towel scrubbing, roughing up the surface into frizz. And wet brushing from the roots — breakage on demand.

The protocol is the corrected order. Lather at the scalp only. Condition from the ears down. Warm water, then a cool finish. Squeeze dry with a soft cloth. Detangle from the ends up. Oil-seal on damp lengths. Heat under 180, if heat at all. Same products you own. Different hair by Friday.

What causes it

  • Misplaced lather. Scalp product on lengths strips. Length product on the scalp flattens.
  • Hot water. It lifts the outer scales and takes the gloss.
  • Towel violence. Wet hair roughed up, drying into frizz.
  • Root-first wet brushing. Hair at its weakest, pulled at its strongest angle.

The plan at a glance

The corrected wash day

  1. Shampoo the SCALP, warm water, fingertip massage. The lengths get the rinse-through.
  2. Condition EARS DOWN. Leave a minute. Rinse fully, cooler at the end.
  3. Squeeze dry with a soft cloth or cotton tee. Press, never rub.
  4. Leave-in ampoule. Detangle ends-first with a wide comb. Oil on the lengths.
  5. Air-dry to damp before any heat. Heat under 180, always over the oil.

The steps

Clarify

Morning & evening

A genuinely clean scalp. The ground floor of every hair goal

A rosemary scaling shampoo lifts the build-up ordinary shampoo leaves behind. Product residue, oil plugs, and the flaky film that makes roots itch and hair sit flat.

Why it matters: Scalp is skin. It collects, it clogs, it flakes. Every scalp goal — comfort, lift, less shedding — starts with clearing the ground the hair grows from.

How to do it: Massage into the scalp, not just the hair, for a full minute before rinsing. Patience does more than a second lather.

Condition — lengths only

Morning & evening

Soft lengths without re-coating the scalp you just cleared

A rosemary conditioner smooths and strengthens the lengths. Applied from the ears down, so the cleared scalp stays clear.

Why it matters: Conditioner on the roots is how clean scalps get quietly re-buried. And how 'my hair goes flat by evening' happens. Lengths need it. The scalp does not.

How to do it: Ears down only. Leave a minute. Rinse thoroughly. Left-over conditioner anywhere is build-up with a head start.

Boost (leave-in, between refills)

Morning & evening

Daily backup between the weekly rebuilds

A leave-in protein ampoule tops up the refill work daily. Light enough not to stiffen. Steady enough to hold the strand between treatment days.

Why it matters: Weekly treatments do the heavy lifting. The leave-in keeps the result. Damaged hair loses its refilled protein with every wash. The boost slows the leak.

How to do it: A pump or two through damp lengths after washing. Comb through, style as usual. Skip the roots.

How to choose between these

Aromatica's Quinoa ampoule is the daily-friendly leave-in. Elizavecca's Ion Injection is the stronger, occasional option for badly damaged lengths.

Seal

Morning & evening

Gloss on top, moisture locked underneath

A hair oil smooths the outer scales flat over the protein work. It seals moisture in, calms frizz, and takes the heat so your hair does not.

Why it matters: The outer scales are the strand's roof tiles. Damage lifts them. Oil lays them down. That is why sealed hair shines, and stops snagging in the brush.

How to do it: Two or three drops warmed between palms. Pressed through damp or dry lengths. Mid-length to ends, never roots. Before heat styling, it doubles as the shield layer.

Elizavecca's CER-100 oil continues the protein story. Aromatica's Ritual Oil is the botanical, lovely-smelling finish.

What to expect

  • Wash one — less frizz by the time it dries. The towel change alone shows same-day.
  • Weeks 1–2 — roots stay fresh longer. Lengths stay smoother.
  • Ongoing — less breakage at the brush. Over months that reads as 'my hair got thicker'. It did not. It stopped being snapped.

Do & don’t

Do

End on the cool rinseThirty seconds that sets the surface smooth for the day.
Keep a wide-tooth comb in the showerConditioner slip is the safest detangling window.
Match wash frequency to your scalp, not a ruleOily scalps can wash daily, gently. Dry ones thrive on less.

Don’t

Do not pile long hair on your head to latherThe twist-and-scrub tangle manufactures breakage.
Do not brush from the roots on wet hairEnds first, working up.
Do not iron damp hairThe sizzle is the water inside boiling. Air-dry first, oil, then heat.
