The Teen Start

Your first routine — three steps, no aisle of confusion

Wash, moisturise, protect. Three steps that skip years of trial and error.

5 minutes a day. Skin settles in 3 to 4 weeks.

This is for you if…

  • Your skin got oilier and spottier and nobody warned you
  • TikTok says you need acids and ten steps (you do not)
  • You wash your face three times a day and it gets worse
  • You borrowed a parent's rich cream and broke out
  • You want to start right, not start over

What’s going on

Here is what is going on. Puberty tells your oil glands to work overtime. More oil means more shine and more blocked pores. It is chemistry, not dirt. It happens to almost everyone your age.

Young skin is good at looking after itself. It does not need strong products. It needs three things done daily. A gentle wash. Light moisture. Sunscreen. That is the whole start. Acids and retinol are made for older skin. They can hurt yours. There is plenty of time for all that later, if you ever need it.

What causes it

Where teen routines go wrong:

  • Washing too much. Stripped skin makes even more oil.
  • Buying what the video said. Strong products hurt young skin for no gain.
  • Borrowed creams. A parent's rich cream is made for drier, older skin.
  • Skipping moisturiser. Oily skin can be thirsty too. Thirsty skin makes more oil.
  • Picking. The only thing on this list that can leave lasting marks.

The plan at a glance

Morning

  1. Wash — 30 seconds, lukewarm.
  2. Gel moisturiser — pea-sized.
  3. Sunscreen — two fingers' worth. The stick goes in the school bag.

Evening (and after sport)

  1. Wash.
  2. Gel moisturiser.

The steps

Wash — twice a day, that's the limit

Morning & evening

Clean skin that does not fight back

A gentle low-pH foam takes off oil, sweat and sunscreen without stripping. That matters most for teenage skin. More oil is coming tomorrow either way.

Why it matters: Washing harder feels logical when skin is oily. It backfires every time. Stripped skin makes MORE oil to cope. Twice a day, gently, wins the long game.

How to do it: Morning, and after school or sport. That is it. Lukewarm water, fingertips, 30 seconds, pat dry with a clean towel. No brushes, no rough cloths.

Pick the one you want. You can also add another product from this step.

How to choose between these

Both are gentle and pH-matched. Etude Soon Jung if you like a soft lather. Torriden's foam if your skin ever feels tight after washing.

Moisturise — light, always

Morning & evening

Yes, oily skin needs this. The trick: it is a gel

A watery gel gives skin the moisture it needs with zero heaviness. Hydrated skin actually makes LESS extra oil than stripped skin.

Why it matters: Skipping moisturiser because 'my skin is oily' is the most common teen mistake. Oil and water are different things. Skin can be oily AND thirsty. Thirsty skin makes more oil.

How to do it: A pea-sized amount after washing, morning and night. Thin, even layer. Fifteen seconds.

  • Oat

How to choose between these

Purito's Oat-In gel if your skin gets red or upset easily. BOJ's Red Bean gel if shine is the bigger issue.

Protect — the habit your 30-year-old self will thank you for

Morning

The habit your future self will thank you for

SPF50+ blocks the sun that makes spot marks darker now and ages skin later. Starting this habit as a teenager is the biggest head start in skincare.

Why it matters: Every spot that leaves a mark does it with the sun's help. And the difference at 40 between lifelong SPF wearers and everyone else is bigger than every serum combined.

How to do it: Two finger-lengths in the morning, as the last step. The stick lives in your school bag for lunchtime top-ups. Thirty seconds, over anything.

How to choose between these

BOJ Aqua-Fresh feels like nothing and never turns white. The easiest sunscreen to actually wear. The Isntree stick is the no-mess top-up for bags and lockers.

Hands off

Morning & evening

The hardest step, and the one that prevents the lasting stuff

Nothing. That is the point. Un-squeezed spots heal in days and vanish. Squeezed ones can scar. And scars have no protocol.

Why it matters: A spot is temporary by design. Your skin already knows how to clear it. Squeezing pushes the mess deeper, doubles the healing time, and gambles a two-week spot against a lasting mark. Bad bet.

How to do it: When the urge hits: cold water on the spot, hands busy elsewhere. Big-event emergency? A calming sheet mask, not fingernails. Mirror time is trigger time. Ration it.

What to expect

  • Week 1 — skin stops feeling tight after washing.
  • Weeks 2–3 — the shine calms down as your skin stops fighting back.
  • Week 4 — it is just what you do now. Spots will still happen sometimes. Hormones outrank skincare. But fewer, calmer, and they heal faster.
