The Pore Story

Pores don't shrink. Here's what actually works.

The truth: pore size is inherited. The playbook: clear plus hydrated looks smaller. Your honest minimum within a month.

4 weeks to the honest minimum. Upkeep after.

This is for you if…

  • Nose and cheek pores that magnifying mirrors made famous
  • You have bought 'pore minimising' products and minimised nothing
  • Blackheads that renew like a subscription
  • Primer is doing structural work in your makeup bag
  • You would take honest facts over another promise

What’s going on

Pores are tiny oil outlets. Their size comes from your genes and your age. They have no muscles. Nothing opens, closes or shrinks them. Any product promising that is arguing with anatomy. What truly changes is how VISIBLE they are. A pore filled with darkened oil — a blackhead — looks twice its size. A clear, hydrated pore sits at its natural minimum.

So the playbook is clear-and-hydrate. Melt the build-up with an evening oil cleanse. Refine with the pore toner and ampoule. Deep-clean weekly with clay. And hydrate, because thirsty skin makes pore shadows look harder. The result is real. It is just honest about what it is.

What causes it

  • Genes. Pore size is inherited. Thank or blame accordingly.
  • Darkened oil. Blackheads are oil that met air, not dirt. Scrubbing misreads them.
  • Long-term blockage. A pore that stays full slowly widens. Clearing early prevents that.
  • Age. As skin firms down, pore edges relax. SPF slows that story.

The plan at a glance

Daily

  1. Evening oil-melt. Dissolves the day's oil before it darkens.
  2. Refine — pore toner and ampoule on the zones that bother you.
  3. SPF. Pore walls are collagen. Sun is collagen's enemy.

Weekly-ish

  1. Clay on the T-zone. The clear toner 2–3 evenings (the Blemish Calm rhythm).

The steps

Melt (evenings)

Evening

The day's oil and SPF out of your pores, gently

A heartleaf cleansing oil dissolves sunscreen, oil and grime. The very things that block pores. Oil dissolves oil. The rule spot-prone skin needs most and fears most.

Why it matters: Spot-prone skin often avoids oils, then scrubs at half-removed SPF with foam. That is worse. A light pore-focused oil removes the blockage without the rubbing that inflames it.

How to do it: Dry face, dry hands. One minute of slow massage. A few extra seconds on the nose and chin. Add water, massage until milky, rinse well, then your gentle wash.

Refine

Morning & evening

Pores at their honest minimum. Which is the real goal

A pore toner and ampoule pair keeps pores clear of the oil and debris that stretch them wider. And waters the skin around them so they sit at their natural size.

Why it matters: Pores are not doors. They do not open, close or shrink below their born size. Anyone promising that is selling. What is real: clear, watered pores LOOK much smaller than clogged, thirsty ones. This step delivers the real version.

How to do it: Toner after washing. Ampoule on the T-zone and anywhere pores bother you. Morning and evening. The weekly clay does the deep clear. This maintains it.

Clear (only when needed)

Weekly

A deep clean for busy zones only

Clay and red bean soak up extra oil from the busy zones. The T-zone, the chin. They lift what a daily wash leaves behind.

Why it matters: Clay is brilliant on oily zones and harsh on dry ones. Used weekly, and only where needed, it keeps congestion down. Used all over dry skin, it takes what your skin cannot spare.

How to do it: Only on the zones that need it. Thin layer. Rinse before it cracks dry. A bone-dry clay mask is past its useful point. Skip this step fully in a dry-skin week.

How to choose between these

The BOJ Red Bean mask is the classic wash-off. The SKIN1004 clay stick is the neat tool. Swipe it exactly where the congestion is.

Protect

Morning

The one step that beats every serum

SPF50+ blocks the daily sun that drives early lines, dark marks and skin damage. Including through windows, and on cloudy British days.

Why it matters: For a beginner, sunscreen gives more long-term benefit than any fancy ingredient you could buy. Skipping it quietly undoes the other three steps. It is a habit from day one in every plan we publish.

How to do it: Two finger-lengths for face and neck, as the last morning step. Top up if you are outdoors for long. Yes, even in winter.

BEAUTY OF JOSEON Relief Sun is the loved everyday classic. Light, dewy, no white cast. HARUHARU Pure Mineral if your skin is very reactive. Mineral SPF sits on top of skin, so it is the gentler choice.

What to expect

  • Weeks 1–2 — blackheads lighten as trapped oil stops darkening in place.
  • Weeks 3–4 — the honest minimum. Pores at their natural size, clear and shadow-free. Photograph before and after. The difference is real.
  • For ever — this is upkeep, not cure. The routine keeps them there. Stopping refills them.
