The Hanbang Primer

What hanbang actually means — the ingredient tour

What hanbang really means. The star ingredients, tried one week each. Then you choose your road.

A 3-week tour. One heritage ingredient per week.

This is for you if…

  • 'Hanbang' is on half the products you browse and explained on none
  • Ginseng, mugwort, rice — you want the map before choosing a road
  • Heritage skincare appeals. Blind heritage shopping does not
  • You are deciding which traditional protocol to run first
  • Curiosity is your actual skin type

What’s going on

Hanbang means traditional Korean herbal medicine. A written system, centuries old. Modern brands keep drawing from its skincare chapter. Real hanbang skincare is not 'has a plant in it'. It is built on that system's star ingredients. Ginseng for vitality. Mugwort for calm. Rice for glow. And the hive pair — honey and propolis — for dew.

The primer is a fair tasting. One week per pillar, on your steady base, one at a time. The Layering Lesson's rules apply even to heritage. By the end you will know which tradition your skin answers to. And which full protocol is your road.

What causes it

The pillars, mapped to what they answer:

  • Ginseng. Tired, dull, early-ageing skin. The vitality pillar. Road: Ginseng Renewal.
  • Mugwort. Stressed, flushing, reactive skin. The calming pillar. Road: Mugwort Calm.
  • Rice. Rough, dull, glow-hungry skin. The brightness pillar. Road: Rice & Honey.
  • The hive. Honey and propolis. The dew pillar. Road: The Propolis Glow.

The plan at a glance

The three-week tour (base routine steady throughout)

  1. Week 1: Ginseng. The essence water in your hydrating slot.
  2. Week 2: Mugwort. The ssuk essence takes the same slot.
  3. Week 3: Rice. The rice toner closes the tour.
  4. Then: note which week your skin was happiest. Follow that pillar's full protocol.

The steps

The ginseng water

Morning & evening

The royal root, first layer of the day

An 80% ginseng water lays protective, watering care as the routine's base. The root the old courts prized, in the layer slot Korea perfected.

Why it matters: Ginseng's old claim was energy. Its modern job is defence against daily stress and a rested, toned look. As the first leave-on layer, it sets up everything after it.

How to do it: Press into damp skin after washing, morning and evening. The faint earthy scent is the root itself. The tradition, unperfumed.

  • Ginseng

The ssuk essence

Morning & evening

One ingredient, doing exactly one job

A single-ingredient mugwort essence. The distilled herb, nothing else. It calms visible stress and blotchiness while watering the skin lightly.

Why it matters: Less is this protocol's medicine. Reactive skin does best with fewer variables. A one-ingredient essence is as few as skincare gets.

How to do it: Press generously into damp skin after washing, morning and evening. Layer twice in stressed weeks. It is built for that.

  • Mugwort

The rice water layer

Morning & evening

77% rice, pressed in the traditional way

A rice toner floods the skin with the grain's softening goodness. Water with the milky-soft finish the whole rice tradition is built on.

Why it matters: This is the glow base of the protocol. Rice brightens gently and slowly. Softness arrives first, light second.

How to do it: Press into damp skin with palms after washing. On dry days, layer it twice. Rice toner suits the seven-skins method.

How to choose between these

I'm From's Rice Toner is the defining version. The Black Rice Toner adds fermenting. Slightly deeper, slightly richer, same family.

What to expect

  • Each week — one pillar, one slot, honest notes. A week gives a signal, not a verdict.
  • Week 4 — the choice. Most people know by now. Skin has opinions when asked one question at a time.
  • After — the chosen protocol runs at full depth. The other two bottles finish as guests. Nothing wasted.

Do & don’t

Do

Hold everything else steady for the tourThree clean tests, one variable each.
Keep a one-line nightly note'Calm', 'glowy' or 'nothing' is enough data.
Enjoy the historyEach bottle is a chapter of an old book. That is more than most serums offer.

Don’t

Do not run all three pillars at onceThat is not hanbang. That is a smoothie.
Do not buy on the word 'hanbang' alone after thisYou will know the ingredients. Check for them.
Do not skip the patch testsHeritage plants are still plants. Mugwort has a ragweed cousin. The hive has its allergies.
