The Gentle Glow

Your first brightening step, without the sting

One serum, six weeks, real glow. The brightening step that strengthens skin instead of taxing it.

6 weeks to visible change. It keeps building after.

This is for you if…

  • Skin looks tired even when you are not
  • Tone is uneven — not marks exactly, just flat
  • Acids scare you, or have burned you before
  • Your base routine is steady and you are ready for one more thing
  • You want glow, not a project

What’s going on

Dull, uneven skin is mostly two things. Colour spread unevenly — old sun, old spots. And a surface too stressed to bounce light well. Niacinamide — vitamin B3 — works on both, gently. It slowly evens tone. And it helps your skin hold water, which is where glow really comes from.

That is why it is the right first brightener. Most glow products ask your skin to put up with them. Niacinamide helps while it works. Slot it into your steady base, keep the SPF on, and let six weeks do the rest.

What causes it

Where dullness comes from:

  • Unprotected sun. Small daily doses that add up.
  • Thirst. Dry surface cells scatter light instead of bouncing it. 'Dull' is often 'thirsty'.
  • Old spot marks. Each one a small stain on a months-long fade clock.
  • Short sleep and stress. They show in skin first.
  • The trap: scrubbing for glow. It shines for a day and costs a fortnight.

The plan at a glance

Daily

  1. Your base routine, unchanged.
  2. Brighten — the niacinamide serum after toner, morning and/or evening.
  3. SPF every morning. Brightening without SPF is bailing water with the tap on.

Optional, 2–4 evenings

  1. The vitamin pad swipe on low-effort nights.

The steps

Brighten

Morning & evening

Glow that builds week by week, no acids involved

A niacinamide serum evens tone and adds glow the patient way. And it supports your skin's wall while it works. That is why beginners cannot really get it wrong.

Why it matters: Dullness has two parts. Uneven surface and uneven tone. Niacinamide works the tone half without the irritation bill that acids charge.

How to do it: After toner, before moisturiser. Morning or evening, or both. Steady use is the active ingredient. Daily for six weeks beats double-dosing for two.

BOJ Glow Serum (2% with propolis) is the gentle entry. Isntree's 20% is the advanced tier. Work up to it. APLB's ampoule sits between.

Evening

A pre-soaked swipe for lazy evenings

Vitamin pads deliver a measured swipe of brighteners, with a light polish from the pad's texture. A serum step in wipe form.

Why it matters: Fully optional. The brighten step alone carries this protocol. The pads earn their place on cannot-be-bothered evenings. A ten-second swipe keeps the streak alive.

How to do it: Swipe the textured side gently over the face after washing. Pat the essence in. Moisturise. Two to four evenings a week. Skip on acid nights.

  • Vitamin C

Protect

Morning

The one step that beats every serum

SPF50+ blocks the daily sun that drives early lines, dark marks and skin damage. Including through windows, and on cloudy British days.

Why it matters: For a beginner, sunscreen gives more long-term benefit than any fancy ingredient you could buy. Skipping it quietly undoes the other three steps. It is a habit from day one in every plan we publish.

How to do it: Two finger-lengths for face and neck, as the last morning step. Top up if you are outdoors for long. Yes, even in winter.

BEAUTY OF JOSEON Relief Sun is the loved everyday classic. Light, dewy, no white cast. HARUHARU Pure Mineral if your skin is very reactive. Mineral SPF sits on top of skin, so it is the gentler choice.

What to expect

  • Weeks 1–2 — nothing visible yet. Keep going. That is normal.
  • Weeks 3–4 — the 'you look well rested' comments start. Overall tone lifts first.
  • Week 6 — compare photos. Evenness is the headline. Old dark marks need months — Vitamin C Mornings is the next gear for those.
