The Gentle 10-Step
The famous routine — decoded, calmed down, made optional
All ten steps explained honestly. Which do the work, which are pleasure, and how to enjoy the lot without upsetting your skin.
20 to 30 calm evening minutes. The rhythm settles in a month.
This is for you if…
- You have heard about 'the 10-step routine' for years with no straight answer
- You love ritual and have the evening time
- Your skin is steady — this is a want, not a repair
- You suspect half the steps are padding (we will say which)
- You want the full experience, done properly, once

The plan at a glance
The steps
Melt
EveningSunscreen and makeup melted, not scrubbed
Oil dissolves oil. A cleansing oil or balm bonds with sunscreen, makeup and the day's grime. They lift away with water. No rubbing needed.
Why it matters: Modern SPF is built to survive water and sweat. A foam alone cannot fully remove it. Trying means scrubbing. The oil does the chemistry so your hands do not do the damage.
How to do it: Dry face, dry hands. Massage slow circles for about a minute. Add a splash of water and massage until milky. Rinse well, then use your gentle cleanser.
Pick the one you want. You can also add another product from this step.
How to choose between these
The BOJ Ginseng oil is the silky classic. Haruharu's Black Rice oil is the lighter, fragrance-aware pick. The BOJ Radiance balm is the solid version. Same job, travels well.
Cleanse
Morning & eveningClean skin without the tight, squeaky feeling
Removes oil, sweat, sunscreen and the day's grime at pH 5.5. That is your skin's own level. Washing takes off the day, not your skin's protection.
Why it matters: This is the step most people get wrong first. A harsh wash quietly causes the tightness and flaking the rest of a routine then has to fix. Start gentle and half of 'problem skin' never happens.
How to do it: Evening: massage gently for 30 to 60 seconds in lukewarm water. Rinse, pat dry. Morning: a lukewarm rinse is enough if your skin leans dry.
Pick the one you want. You can also add another product from this step.
How to choose between these
Both sit at skin's own pH, so pick by feel. The HARUHARU gel is soft and non-foaming. The safest pick if your skin ever feels tight after washing. The Soon Jung foam gives a light lather if you like a little foam.
The weekly acid
WeeklyUnglues the dull layer. Once a week is the whole trick
An exfoliating acid dissolves the glue holding old surface cells on. The newer surface underneath shows through. Quick smoothness, building glow.
Why it matters: Skin renewal slows with age, stress and thirst. Dull, rough skin is old cells overstaying. One well-dosed acid evening does what daily scrubbing pretends to. Without the damage bill.
How to do it: One evening a week to start. On dry skin after washing. Nothing else strong that night. Hydrate and seal after. Go to twice weekly only after four comfortable weeks. Morning SPF is part of the deal.
- Exfoliating Acids
Pick the one you want. You can also add another product from this step.
How to choose between these
BOJ's Green Plum toner is the mildest entry. Isntree's Chestnut AHA 8% is the proper weekly tool. epii's PHA toner is the sensitive-skin lane. PHA is the biggest, gentlest acid.
Hydrate
Morning & eveningThe first drink of water your skin gets all day
A Korean toner is not the harsh splash your parents used. It is a light layer of water-grabbers. It returns moisture the moment washing ends, and gives your cream something to seal in.
Why it matters: Freshly washed skin loses water fast. Watering it within a minute is the simplest habit in skincare with the most visible payoff.
How to do it: While skin is still damp, pour a little into your palms and press it in until absorbed. Palms, not cotton pads.
- Panthenol
- Hyaluronic Acid
Pick the one you want. You can also add another product from this step.
How to choose between these
Soon Jung if your skin often feels upset. Its panthenol calms while it hydrates. HARUHARU's hyaluronic toner if tightness is your main feeling.
The essence — the heart of the K-routine
Morning & eveningThe step that makes Korean routines Korean
An essence sits between toner and serum. More treatment than a toner, lighter than a serum. It adds one more thin layer of skin-conditioning water.
Why it matters: In the layering way of thinking, glow comes from many thin layers of water rather than one rich cream. The essence is that idea in a bottle. It is also where a routine starts feeling like a ritual.
How to do it: After toner. Pour a small pool into your palms and press it in. Pressing, not rubbing, is the tradition. Let it settle a few seconds before the next layer.
- Ginseng
- Snail Mucin
Pick the one you want. You can also add another product from this step.
How to choose between these
BOJ's Ginseng Essence Water is the heritage classic. SKIN1004's Probio-Cica leans calming. COSRX's Snail 96 is the bouncy glass-skin icon. And yes, it is lovely.
Slot in ONE active
Morning & eveningProgress you can actually trace
A strong product — an acid, vitamin C, niacinamide, retinol — goes into the serum slot. Acids take the toner slot. Everything else stays the same.
Why it matters: One at a time is not just caution. It is the only way to know what works. Add three things and improve? You are paying for three when one did the job. React? You cannot tell which to drop.
How to do it: Pick by your loudest concern, not the trend. Dull or uneven: a niacinamide serum. Dark marks: vitamin C in the morning, under SPF. Rough texture: a gentle acid toner, two evenings a week. Slot it in. Hold everything else steady.
- Niacinamide
- Exfoliating Acids
Pick the one you want. You can also add another product from this step.
How to choose between these
BOJ Glow Serum for the gentlest brightening start. Jumiso's VC-IP for steady vitamin C. BOJ Green Plum toner for a first acid. Whichever you pick — just one. Our Glow & Renew protocols take you deeper when ready.
Soak
WeeklyTwenty minutes of deep watering your skin cannot get any other way
A sheet mask pins a watery essence against your skin and stops it drying off. Twenty minutes of cover that pushes water in far better than hands can.
Why it matters: Once a week, not daily. Daily soaking can upset skin. That is how a calming ritual becomes a new problem. Weekly, it is the best water top-up in skincare.
How to do it: On clean, toned skin. Fifteen to twenty minutes. Never until the mask dries — a drying mask starts pulling water back OUT. Peel, pat the essence in, seal with the next step.
- Hyaluronic Acid
- Centella Asiatica
Pick the one you want. You can also add another product from this step.
How to choose between these
Pick by this week's need. Thirsty skin: the Torriden or Isntree hyaluronic masks. Cranky, reactive week: Anua's heartleaf, BOJ's centella, or Pyunkang Yul's calming mask. There is no prize for using the same one every time.
Eyes, morning and night
Morning & eveningReal care for the thinnest skin you own
Eye creams deliver water and firm-support in textures made for skin about ten times thinner than your cheek. Rich enough to work. Light enough to stay put overnight.
Why it matters: The eye area has almost no oil glands. And it moves with every blink and smile. It dries first and creases first. Your face cream helps, but it was not built for this ground.
How to do it: A grain of rice per eye. Dab along the bone with your ring finger — the gentlest one, on purpose. Pat, never drag. Morning and evening.
- Peptides
Pick the one you want. You can also add another product from this step.
How to choose between these
Isntree TW-Real is the classic cream route. The AXIS-Y collagen serum is the lighter feel if creams sit heavy under concealer.
Moisturise
Morning & eveningSeals the water in, morning and night
Puts a light layer of fats and water-grabbers over the toner. The water you just added stays in your skin instead of drying off.
Why it matters: Water without a seal fades within the hour. The moisturiser turns steps one and two into lasting comfort.
How to do it: A pea-to-hazelnut amount pressed onto still-damp skin. Press and smooth, do not scrub it in. A little more at night is fine.
- Oat
- Centella Asiatica
Pick the one you want. You can also add another product from this step.
How to choose between these
The Purito Oat-In gel if you are combination-to-oily or dislike creams. Oat calms, and the gel disappears into skin. The Purito centella cream if you are normal-to-dry or your skin runs reactive.
Protect
MorningThe one step that beats every serum
SPF50+ blocks the daily sun that drives early lines, dark marks and skin damage. Including through windows, and on cloudy British days.
Why it matters: For a beginner, sunscreen gives more long-term benefit than any fancy ingredient you could buy. Skipping it quietly undoes the other three steps. It is a habit from day one in every plan we publish.
How to do it: Two finger-lengths for face and neck, as the last morning step. Top up if you are outdoors for long. Yes, even in winter.
Pick the one you want. You can also add another product from this step.
How to choose between these
BEAUTY OF JOSEON Relief Sun is the loved everyday classic. Light, dewy, no white cast. HARUHARU Pure Mineral if your skin is very reactive. Mineral SPF sits on top of skin, so it is the gentler choice.
