The Fragrance-Free Reset

For the reaction you can't pin down

One month with zero fragrance. The simple test that finds the mystery irritant.

4 weeks clean. Then bring back one scented product at a time.

This is for you if…

  • Something in your routine irritates you and you cannot find it
  • Stinging or itching with no clear pattern
  • 'Sensitive skin' products that still upset your skin
  • You have never tried a fragrance-free month
  • Your products smell lovely (that is the clue)

What’s going on

Fragrance is the most common trigger in cosmetics. That includes natural essential oils. It hides behind the word 'parfum' on labels. And behind nice memories in your head. So it is the last thing anyone suspects.

The reset is a simple test. Four weeks on a fully unscented routine. If the mystery irritation goes quiet, you have your answer. Then bring scented favourites back one at a time, two weeks apart. The one that restarts the itch does not come home. If nothing changes, you have cleared the biggest suspect. The search gets easier either way.

What causes it

  • 'Parfum'. One label word that can cover dozens of hidden scents.
  • Essential oils. Natural, lovely, and a very common trigger.
  • Adding up. Five lightly scented products make one heavily scented routine.
  • Slow build. Fragrance reactions can develop after years of happy use.

The plan at a glance

For four weeks, morning and evening

  1. Unscented gel cleanse.
  2. Unscented centella toner and serum.
  3. Unscented cream. SPF in the morning. Mineral ones are usually cleanest.

Everything else pauses. Including the scented body lotion that touches your jaw.

The steps

Cleanse

Morning & evening

Clean skin without the tight, squeaky feeling

Removes oil, sweat, sunscreen and the day's grime at pH 5.5. That is your skin's own level. Washing takes off the day, not your skin's protection.

Why it matters: This is the step most people get wrong first. A harsh wash quietly causes the tightness and flaking the rest of a routine then has to fix. Start gentle and half of 'problem skin' never happens.

How to do it: Evening: massage gently for 30 to 60 seconds in lukewarm water. Rinse, pat dry. Morning: a lukewarm rinse is enough if your skin leans dry.

Pick the one you want. You can also add another product from this step.

How to choose between these

Both sit at skin's own pH, so pick by feel. The HARUHARU gel is soft and non-foaming. The safest pick if your skin ever feels tight after washing. The Soon Jung foam gives a light lather if you like a little foam.

Calm

Morning & evening

Water and calm before anything else touches your skin

Puts water back into freshly washed skin. And delivers centella, the calming herb this product line is named for.

Why it matters: Damp, calmed skin accepts the next steps without stinging. Serum on dry, upset skin is the most common reason people think a product 'does not suit them'.

How to do it: Pour a few drops into your palms. Press into the skin. No cotton pads. They add rubbing.

  • Centella Asiatica
  • Hyaluronic Acid

The centella toner is the default for reactive skin. Very dry instead? The Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner adds more water.

Repair

Morning & evening

Strong calming support while the wall rebuilds

A rich dose of centella. It soothes reactive skin and supports your skin's own repair.

Why it matters: During a reset your skin is working hard to rebuild. This step backs that work up. No acids, no demands. Just help.

How to do it: Two pumps over the whole face while skin is still damp from the toner.

The centella serum is the core pick. If centella has ever upset your skin, the HUECALM water-light serum is the alternative.

Seal

Morning & evening

Puts back the exact fats your skin is missing

Delivers ceramides — the fats your stripped wall lost. And holds everything underneath in place while it rebuilds.

Why it matters: This is the rebuilding step itself. Everything before it prepares the wall. This one refills the mortar. It is why the protocol is built around this cream.

How to do it: Apply to slightly damp skin, morning and night. Use a slightly thicker layer in the evening.

  • Ceramides

The Atobarrier 365 is the anchor. Ceramides, built for exactly this job. The Purito centella cream is the lighter option if 365 feels too rich in summer.

What to expect

  • Weeks 1–2 — any current irritation settles. The test is not done yet.
  • Weeks 3–4 — the answer window. Quiet skin points at fragrance. No change clears it.
  • After — one scented product back per two weeks. Let your skin vote on each.

Do & don’t

Do

Read labels for 'parfum', 'aroma', 'linalool', 'limonene'Those are the aliases.
Include hair products and pillow spraysThey reach your face nightly.
Keep short weekly notesA test is only as good as its diary.

Don’t

Do not bring back three products at once in week fiveThat undoes the whole month.
Do not assume natural means safeEssential oils are fragrance with better PR.
Do not skip the test because you would miss the smellThat is exactly why it went untested this long.
