The Dark Spot Dossier

Know your mark, pick your weapon

Know your mark, pick your plan. Spot marks, sun spots and melasma each get their own lane.

One read to sort your marks. Fading takes 2 to 6 months by type.

This is for you if…

  • Dark marks — but you could not say which kind
  • Spot marks, sun freckles and 'that patch' all treated the same
  • Serums that worked for someone else did nothing for yours
  • You want the sorting guide, not another random buy
  • Months of effort deserve a plan

What’s going on

'Dark spots' is three different things wearing one name. Spot marks: flat, pink-to-brown, where a spot was. Easiest — they are already fading, and vitamin C plus SPF speeds them up. Sun spots: small, defined, on the sunny zones, growing in number with age. Slower — vitamin C, gentle acids and strict SPF soften them. Deep ones belong with a skin doctor. Melasma: larger, matching patches on both sides, linked to hormones. The specialist case — SPF first, always, and the most worth professional advice.

Matching mark to lane is most of the battle. And every lane shares one rule. The sun tops up all three types daily. SPF is not part of the plan. It IS the plan. The serums assist.

What causes it

  • Spot marks: the swelling told skin to make extra colour. Picking multiplied it.
  • Sun spots: years of small sun doses, printed where the sun always lands.
  • Melasma: hormones prime the colour cells. Sun then switches them on.
  • All three: every unprotected noon, quietly re-inked.

The plan at a glance

All lanes, daily

  1. Vitamin C, mornings, under SPF50+. The universal pair.

By mark type

  1. Spot marks: add nothing. C plus SPF plus time wins this one.
  2. Sun spots: add the weekly acid evening (the Gentle Renewal rhythm).
  3. Melasma: mineral SPF, religiously. Keep acids minimal — heat and irritation can worsen it. A skin-doctor visit is money well spent.

The steps

The morning antioxidant

Morning

Marks fade, tone lifts, your SPF gets a teammate

Vitamin C works two jobs. It defends against the daily sun-and-city stress your sunscreen cannot fully block. And over weeks it fades the dark marks that spots and sun left behind.

Why it matters: Morning is vitamin C's shift, because that is when the stress arrives. Under SPF, the pair beats either alone.

How to do it: A few drops on clean, dry skin. Then moisturiser, then SPF. No exceptions on the SPF while fading marks. Judge monthly by photo, not daily by mirror.

How to choose between these

Jumiso's VC-IP is the steady, no-sting form. The right start. Goodal's Green Tangerine leans hardest into dark marks. Numbuzin No.5 is the glow-first crowd pick. BOJ's Light On adds centella if your skin runs reactive.

The weekly acid

Weekly

Unglues the dull layer. Once a week is the whole trick

An exfoliating acid dissolves the glue holding old surface cells on. The newer surface underneath shows through. Quick smoothness, building glow.

Why it matters: Skin renewal slows with age, stress and thirst. Dull, rough skin is old cells overstaying. One well-dosed acid evening does what daily scrubbing pretends to. Without the damage bill.

How to do it: One evening a week to start. On dry skin after washing. Nothing else strong that night. Hydrate and seal after. Go to twice weekly only after four comfortable weeks. Morning SPF is part of the deal.

BOJ's Green Plum toner is the mildest entry. Isntree's Chestnut AHA 8% is the proper weekly tool. epii's PHA toner is the sensitive-skin lane. PHA is the biggest, gentlest acid.

Protect

Morning

The one step that beats every serum

SPF50+ blocks the daily sun that drives early lines, dark marks and skin damage. Including through windows, and on cloudy British days.

Why it matters: For a beginner, sunscreen gives more long-term benefit than any fancy ingredient you could buy. Skipping it quietly undoes the other three steps. It is a habit from day one in every plan we publish.

How to do it: Two finger-lengths for face and neck, as the last morning step. Top up if you are outdoors for long. Yes, even in winter.

BEAUTY OF JOSEON Relief Sun is the loved everyday classic. Light, dewy, no white cast. HARUHARU Pure Mineral if your skin is very reactive. Mineral SPF sits on top of skin, so it is the gentler choice.

What to expect

  • Months 1–2 — spot marks respond first. Monthly photos catch it.
  • Months 3–6 — sun spots soften. The newest fade fastest.
  • Melasma — it cycles with hormones and seasons. Managing beats chasing. Professionals hold the strongest tools.
