Hydrating Serums

Hydrating Serums help when dry or dehydrated skin needs more than a moisturiser alone can provide. Lightweight and concentrated, they deliver deep, lasting moisture that keeps the skin feeling comfortable and balanced throughout the day.

For those whose skin feels tight, dull, or thirsty no matter what they apply, a hydrating serum is often the missing step.

Hydrating Serums address dehydration at a deeper level than surface moisturisers can reach. Their lightweight, water-based formulas absorb quickly and condition the skin from within the routine, supporting lasting comfort from morning through to evening.

What Makes a Hydrating Serum Effective

The best hydrating serums work because of what is in them, not just how much water they contain. Hyaluronic acid - a humectant that draws moisture to the skin surface - is the most widely used active in this category. Multi-weight hyaluronic acid (combining different molecular sizes) reaches the skin at multiple depths for a more thorough result. Sodium PCA is another powerful humectant that occurs naturally in the skin. Polyglutamic acid holds moisture even more effectively than hyaluronic acid alone and extends the hydrating effect throughout the day.

  • Hyaluronic acid for surface-level hydration
  • Multi-weight formulas reach multiple depths
  • Sodium PCA for natural moisture support
  • Polyglutamic acid for extended hydration

How a Hydrating Serum Differs From a Moisturiser

A moisturiser works primarily at the surface - it seals in what is already there and protects against moisture loss. A hydrating serum draws moisture into the skin first, giving the moisturiser something valuable to lock in. Using them together produces a much better result than either step alone. Think of the serum as the hydration delivery step and the moisturiser as the barrier step - both are necessary for skin that is genuinely and consistently comfortable.

  • Serum draws moisture in
  • Moisturiser locks moisture in place
  • Both steps together give the best result
  • Serum applies before moisturiser, always

Under SPF and Makeup

Hydrating serums sit comfortably beneath SPF and makeup. Their lightweight, fast-absorbing formulas do not pill under subsequent products when applied correctly. Allow the serum to fully absorb - usually thirty to sixty seconds - before applying SPF or foundation. Avoid applying too much product at once, as excess formula on the surface can affect how makeup sits. A thin, even layer of serum is enough to hydrate and prime the skin effectively for whatever comes next.

  • Allow full absorption before SPF
  • A thin layer is enough - do not over-apply
  • Works well under all SPF and foundation types
  • Lightweight formulas do not pill

Suitable for Oily or Combination Skin

A hydrating serum is one of the best things oily or combination skin can add to a routine. Dehydrated skin - which is low on water, not oil - can overproduce sebum to compensate for that water deficit. Replacing the water with a lightweight, non-occlusive hydrating serum helps rebalance the skin and can reduce excess shine over time. Look for gel or water-gel textures that absorb without any heavy feel and are free from occlusive emollients like petroleum or heavy waxes.

  • Oily skin is often dehydrated too
  • Hydration can reduce excess sebum over time
  • Choose gel or water-gel textures
  • Avoid heavy emollients on oily skin

How Much Serum to Apply

Two to four drops is enough for most hydrating serums - a small amount goes a long way. Apply to clean, slightly damp skin after your toner or essence, then press gently into the face and neck using the palms of your hands. Damp skin absorbs hyaluronic acid more effectively, so timing matters. Seal immediately with your moisturiser while the serum is still slightly present on the skin to maximise the hydrating effect.

  • Two to four drops is plenty
  • Apply to slightly damp skin for best absorption
  • Press in gently with palms
  • Seal with moisturiser straight away
